GAMELAN JAZZ LAB

Since September 2023, Collectif Koa has been developing the Gamelan Jazz Lab project, centered on the creation “Gaga Gundul” by the French group Peemaï (Collectif Koa), featuring the Javanese collective Gayam 16 (Yogyakarta, Indonesia). This collaboration has led the ensemble to create a repertoire that merges electric jazz and traditional Asian melodies, with a special focus on the Javanese gamelan.
The Gamelan Jazz Lab introduces children to the artistic approach behind Gaga Gundul as well as to the interwoven musical worlds of Peemaï and Gayam 16. It is built around several educational and outreach activities, including:
-
Meetings with the artists
-
Hands-on gamelan workshops
-
Creation of a musical story
-
Educational concerts
Developed in partnership with primary schools and local associations, the project culminates in a final performance bringing together Peemaï, Gayam 16, and the participating children — a powerful moment that embodies the fusion of musical cultures and collective creativity at the heart of the Gamelan Jazz Lab.
